Families face a daunting challenge when it comes to preserving their legacies and ensuring smooth transitions of their assets from one generation to the next. The complexity of managing critical aspects — such as documenting stories, preparing important legal documents, and planning for end-of-life transitions — can be overwhelming, particularly during emotionally charged times like the loss of a loved one. While genealogy helps families understand their roots, values, and traditions, transition planning ensures that these histories, along with financial and legal responsibilities, are passed down smoothly and securely to future generations. Without an integrated solution, families struggle to maintain continuity, risking the loss of both their history and their contributions.
Legacy preservation and transition planning are deeply interconnected, and Guarden’s unified approach ensures that family history is not only documented but also securely passed down to future generations, creating a continuous narrative that connects past, present, and future. Secondary research revealed the sad condition of end-of-life planning and legacy preservation. Most families are left to manage their loved ones' assets and memories only while they're grieving.
Reviewing the top tools dedicated to family legacy preservation and transition planning
Primary research consisted of a user survey exploring families experiences with transition planning and their relationship with family legacy.
The card sort outcomes across participants largely held a similar pattern. There were 4 similar themes in category groupings — Account, Legal/Financial, Family Operations, and Family Preservation. Labels that were dissimilar among participants were the more vague terms “Documents”, “Legal Guidance”, “Transition Plan”, “Family Member”, and “Heirlooms & Artifacts”. This finding proves the need for clear, specific language when structuring the app.
